Dragon Quest VIII is looking good on the 3DS

Time to bang us a Yangus

When it was first released on the PS2 in 2004, Dragon Quest VIIIdefiantly stood apart from the sea of pseudo-realistic, cut scene heavy RPGs and action games that largely populated the console at that time. It aspired to offer players polygon-based characters that worked hard to replicate illustrator Akira Toriyama’s signature 2D style, a big, open world to explore, and just enough story to allow players to stay anchored to the game’s setting, but not so much that they felt weighed down. These are just a few of the reasons that many consider the game to be a classic.

Like Xenoblade Chronicles, Dragon Quest VIII doesn’t look quite as good on the 3DS as it did on home consoles, but there is still enough here to get me hungry for a potential Western release. Let’s hope Square Enix has some good news for us next week at E3.
