Nothing you can’t live without

Ever since Sony confirmed that the PlayStation 5 would be backward compatible with PS4 games, there has been a cloud of confusion hanging over its functionality. It doesn’t extend to any generations before PS4, and PlayStation architect Mark Cerny says “nearly all” last-gen games will run on PS5. We’ve been left wondering how vast that list of omissions will be.

As it turns out, it’s not bad at all. Sony released a list of the 10 games that won’t be available via backward compatibility and are only playable on PS4. Here they are:

  • Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume 1
  • DWVR
  • Hitman GO: Definitive Edition
  • Joe’s Diner
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Shadwen
  • TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2
  • We Sing

There’s not much here that will leave people in tears. Hitman GO and Shadow Complexare fine games, so pour one out for them. Just Deal With Itis an ironic title in a list about having to make concessions.

It’s not clear whether this list is completely exhaustive at this point. Back in March, Sony emphasized that it was still testing every single PS4 title to see if it’d function with backward compatibility. Also, there’s no mention of which games can make use of the boosted mode that enhances PS4 titles on PS5 with higher frame rates. Still, out of 4,000-some games, leaving 10 behind ain’t bad.

There isn’t much on the rest of the backward compatibility support page that will perk up ears. However, it’s noted that digital games and save files can be transferred from PS4 to PS5 over WiFi. That’s huge. Also, Sony recommends playing PS4 titles on PS5 with a DualShock 4 controller rather than the PS5’s DualSense. Don’t throw those old DualShocks out just yet.
