I’lll show you mine if you show me yours

Covering the PC gaming news beat requires that I spend a lot of my time researching the newest titles and the latest industry happenings for the site. Admittedly, I love to learn about new things and I especially enjoy sharing these things with you, the community; but with all the other obligations that I juggle during the week it doesn’t leave a lot of time for me to chip away at my backlog, or try out all the games that tend to stack up from my Humble Bundle purchases.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a complaint; it’s just a fact of life for a lot of us. I still get to enjoy the veritable mountain of games in my Steam library, but extended play sessions pretty much have to be relegated to the weekends. I’m sure this may sound familiar to many of you. Whether it’s school, making a living, or just spending qualitytime with your family, free time ends up being in short supply — that’s why I treasure the weekends.

As I settled in on this particular weekend to sample some of the stuff I’ve had on my ever-expanding list of “games-I-need-to-finally-get-around-to-playing,” I started wondering whatgames theDestructoid community were playing this weekend.

Were there any hidden gems youdiscovered that we’ve somehow overlooked? Any particular stand-out moments in your weekend gaming sessions that stuck with you? What about old favorites that you come back to and play over and over again?

I’ll start it off with a few that I’ve been tinkering with, but after that, I hope you’ll take the time to tell us how you spent your weekend gaming.

Dungeon of the Endless

I’ve had this one in my library for a while, but only got around to spending some quality time with it on Saturday. So far, I’m enjoying it quite a bit. It skillfully manages to incorporate rogue-like elements, tower defense strategy, and dungeon crawler sensibilities into a pixel-perfect work of art. Seriously, it’s something else. It may not be the right game for everyone, but it’s definitely got my attention.

Crypt of the Necrodancer

Another one that I’ve regretfully neglected is Brace Yourself Games’ delightful rhythm-based dungeon crawling roguelike, Crypt of the Necrodancer. Originally, I thought this game probably wouldn’t be for me — the stiff-looking, beat-timed gameplay didn’t seem all that appealing. Turns out, the title is way more fun than I had originally given it credit for. It’s one of those, “you really need to try it” sort of games that catches you by surprise once you’ve finally got your hands on it. Danny Baranowsky’s soundtrack is outstanding and had me donning my best set of DJ headphones with the volume turned up while I played.

Broforce/The Expendabros

What more can be said about these games? The Broforce titles are amazing! Free Lives’ minimalist shooters are my recent go-to titles for short gaming sessions or when I can’t decide what it is that I want to play. For me, they’re always fun, all of the time. The controls are just simple enough that that I can pick them up and enjoy them when I’m completely exhausted. They don’t require a lot of concentration and you respawn so quickly that death-by-poor-decision never leaves me feeling frustrated. In fact, it usually brings a smile. For the small amount of time and effort that you need to invest, these games really give you a lot in return.

Well, that’s enough about the games that I’ve been playing. How about you? What games did you spend your weekend playing?
