Oh yay, Neon Genesis Evangelion is coming to Netflix

Cruel Angel’s Streaming Service

I know reboots of popular old names from the ’90s is but one part of Netflix’s strategy for keeping people subscribed, but I’ll be damned if I’m not jazzed at the news that they’re also just putting some good old stuff back on there, in some cases for the first time. Like legendary anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The work of ex-Ghibli auteur Hideaki Anno, Evangelionburst onto the scene in the mid-’90s and played a big role in changing popular perceptions of anime as a medium, especially overseas. It wouldn’t be too huge a stretch to say that it influenced virtually every work that came after for at least a decade, and its echoes are still seen today, though more often in weird marketing tie-ups more than anything else.

This is also significant, as it’s the first time the original series has debuted on an (international) streaming service. For whatever reason, anime fans have had a hard time getting their eyes on the show legally and without having to buy expensive, out-of-print DVD collections or settling for the initially-similar-but-suddenly-extremely-different Rebuildmovies.

Unfortunately for the impatient, Evangelionisn’t on Netflix right now. It’ll be aired sometime next year. No word yet on if it’ll be out in other territories, but at the least Americans can expect to watch Shinji’s saga in Spring 2019. In the meantime, check out some fine tweets below.
