Just in time for some fist-throwing betas

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will be holding a free trial weekend for its PlayStation Plus service this coming weekend. Players can enjoy some of the benefits of the PS4/PS5 paid subscription service free of charge between Saturday, December 18 and Monday, December 20. There are, however, some caveats.

The free trial appears to mostly pertain to playing multiplayer titles, so players will not be able to download any of the PlayStation Plus “free” games nor the PS5 PlayStation Plus Collection. This trial period seems purely an opportunity to engage in some online multiplayer, be it in Street Fighter V, Grand Theft Auto Online, Fortnite, or Destiny 2. This weekend sees open betas for both The King of Fighters XV and underdog DNF Duel, so this trial has pretty good timing.

PlayStation Plus has been an incredibly money-turner for Sony since its launch back in the summer of 2010 (no, really). The service offers online play, cloud storage for saves, images, and video clips, exclusive discounts, and a rotating selection of games every single month. PS5 owners also have access to a library of fantastic titles, such as God of War, Persona 5, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Bloodborne, and many more. At the time of writing, PlayStation Plus boasts just under 50 million global subscribers. You can find out the pricing scheme for your region over on the PlayStation Store.
