And broke some records along the way

Every now and then, when a videogame launches and does mega numbers, the publisher likes to toot its own horn a little bit. It should come as no surprise that this is the case withDestinyafter all it was [synonym for “destined”] all along, right? Activision sent out a tidy little press release outlining just how well Bungie’s new game has performed so far.

In just first day stats, Destinyshipped more than $500 million. That’s a lot of moon bucks. It’s enough for Activision to give it the distinction of being the most successful new videogame franchise launch of all-time (if we’re using first day sales as the metric to determine such things).

Likewise, Destiny‘s the highest selling first day digital console release ever — a record that isn’t very old at all, and will likely fall once consumer adoption of current consoles increases. Regardless, it’s still $500 million, and that’s nothing to scoff at. Activision projects that Destinywill be its next billion dollar franchise. Halfway there ain’t a bad start.
