Give me my 12″ Sulley figure anyway, Disney
It was announced a few days ago that Disney Infinity is being cancelled due to slumping interest in the series. That’s disappointing in and of itself, but what’s worse is that, according to Kotaku, Disney Infinity 4.0 would’ve been awesome.
It is claimed by Kotaku’s anonymous sources thatDisney Infinity 4.0(not the official title, it would’ve dropped the numbering system for this one) would’ve seen the introduction of new, larger figurines. These 12” figures would’ve been more detailed, included flashy lights, and done special things in-game. However, they’d have also been more expensive, pricing at a hefty $45. Hulk, Hulkbuster, Elsa, Buzz Lightyear, Darth Vader, and Jack Skellington were all apparently lined up to get these bigger models. Who wouldn’t want a 12” Buzz on their shelf?!
Interestingly,Infinity 4.0doesn’t seem to have had a running theme for which franchises it used.2.0was Marvel-focused, whereas3.0was all about Star Wars, yet 4.0 was going to be set around a wide range of upcoming Disney/Marvel/Star Wars movies.Coco,Cars 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok,andStar Wars: Episode VIIIwere all going to be included. Ninja Theory was working on content based onRogue One: A Star Wars Storyand Studio Gobo was handling the upcomingMoana.It looks like4.0was going to have a nice range of different IPs compared to previous entries to the series.
Best of all,4.0was set to include story content in the Toy Box mode. Toy Box is a mainstay feature for theInfinityseries, letting you mix and match characters, props, and locations to make your own fun. However, this new mode would’ve let players use characters who are not native to a level play through its story. For example, Darth Vader could’ve run about Monsters University, and Elsa could’ve gone and chilled with the Avengers (surely her ice powers let her qualify to join them?).
It’s a massive shame that Disney pulled the plug on4.0.While I wasn’t a big fan of how the series tended to focus on whatever Disney’s hot new thing at the moment is,4.0looked like it was really making some cool improvements to the formula.
