New gameplay footage shows armor options, combat stances, and the Guiding Wind

Action-loving PS4 players have one last samurai adventure left to embark on before Sony shifts the spotlight to PlayStation 5, and today, we’re getting an extended look at what Sucker Punch Productions has been up to since 2014’s inFamous: First Light. You can watch the Ghost of Tsushima State of Play stream right here starting at 1:00 p.m. Pacific. Settle in for a cozy 18-minute gameplay preview.

Ghost of Tsushima is in my wheelhouse, but in terms of marketing, Sony has been so guarded until now that I’ve had to mentally put it on ice, so to speak. I know I’m going to enjoy it – that’s been clear for years. I don’t doubt that Sucker Punch can pull off an open-world samurai epic. My only fear is that once we dig into this slice of gameplay, the wait for July 17 (release day) will suddenly feel like an eternity.

Coming in, my biggest question mark is combat – how much depth there is, how challenging it will be, and how it’ll progress, especially as Jin leans into a more stealth-minded approach. I’m already sold on the exploration side of Ghost of Tsushima. I can’t wait to ride through flowing fields on horseback.

Sony went out of its way to say that this State of Play broadcast won’t have “PS5 news or updates.” Once The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima are out, I hope Sony opens up more. It’s fair to assume this game will run better on PlayStation 5, but at the same time, I can’t see myself waiting to play it.

Can we go three for three? Sekiro was unforgettable, Nioh 2 was more of the loot-grinding good stuff, and with any luck, Ghost of Tsushima will help end this generation on a high note. It’s bittersweet.
