Is it multiplayer? ‘It’s not so simple’

The more I hear about Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding, the less I feel like I have a handle on it. That’s surely by design. Speaking to Wired, game director Hideo Kojima fanned the flames of intrigue.

“What people are playing today in open-world action games, or linear action games, it will compare naturally to them,” he told the outlet. “It will feel familiar. But after an hour or two of playing, you will start to feel something different, something new that you haven’t played. The story is about connections, what you call ‘strands’ in psychology — how people are connected.”

Which helps explain the bizarre title a bit. “Connecting people through gameplay is the basis of the game,” says Kojima. “Trying to connect one character to another, or to connect life and death.”

Asked if Death Stranding is a multiplayer game, he came back with, “It’s not so simple. It’s a new system.” See what I mean? I’m as confused as ever, and I get the feeling we won’t have a good, satisfying grasp on this game until years from now when it’s on our screens.

Until then, I’m going to enjoy the fan speculation. Definitely read through the full interview.
