Not surprised, but still immensely impressed

Minecraft is one of those games that will be around forever because of its versatility, among other things. You can go on heart-pounding adventures with friends in survival mode, jump into one of thousands of servers for a unique role-playing experience, just chill out in creative mode for a bit, and so much more. I think one of the most impressive things to come out of Minecraft, though, is what players have been able to whip up using Redstone. We’ve seen it all over the years — fully automated farms, giant smart houses, and even working iPhones and computers. Just when I thought I’d seen it all, I logged onto Reddit to see that a user who goes by the name of hanmango_kiwi had created a 3D graphing calculator in Minecraft that runs in real-time.

The video shows the player placing blocks into the calculator, each of which would correspond to a button on the device in real life. Then all the player has to do is simply click a button to run whichever function they choose (it appears they can have quite a few of them lined up and ready to go) and the function is drawn behind them with various blocks.

Minecraft has been lauded for its possibilities to aid in education for a while now, but this is one of the best examples I’ve seen. It’s one thing to see complicated functions drawn out on a tiny, pixelated 2D screen, but it’s another entirely to see them drawn out in 3D space, where you can see it from all angles to get a better idea of how these functions really work. I’m so incredibly blown away that hanmango_kiwi was able create this working Minecraft graphing calculator in the first place, and I have to admit this would have helped me conceptualize some of the more complex math concepts when I was in school.
