I wish Noob still looked like that, though

The roster of NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 11 almost matches up with the roster of the original Mortal Kombat games, save for a few omissions. The gory fighting franchise sure has changed a lot since those digitised days of the early ’90s – all that really remains today is the ridiculous gore and the fact that jump-ins are still totally broken.

A neat video, created by expert combo-maker Ahmz1404, has surfaced on YouTube, which lets the modern day versions of the klassic kombatants hang out with their 20-plus-year-old kounterparts. The gang’s all here, from ninjas Sub-Zero, Scorpion and Noob Saibot, to Edenian royalty Kitana, Jade and Sindel, and Earthrealm warriors Johnny Cage, Liu Kang and Sonya Blade. Even colossal dickhead Shao Kahn shows up.

For Mortal Kombat fans, particularly those as old as The Industry’s Chris Moyse, the video is a fun reminder of those humble beginnings, where every kombatant was an actual person, having their maneuvers mo-capped on a green sound stage. It was a simpler time, where everyone bullshitted that they’d fought Goro in MK II, cheating A.I. was the norm, and we were completely fine with the fact every kharacter had the same normals. The latest iteration, Mortal Kombat 11, is a solid entry, one that comes into its own a little more each month. Still, the teen in me does miss that MK 3 soundtrack. And Mileena… And Pit Fatalities… And even Stryker for that matter. But then, that’s why the Elder Gods created DLC.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
