Serenity NOW!

The retro JRPG aesthetic is infinitely appealing to me, and Natsume and Kemco hope you’ll feel the same way with the upcoming End of Serenity. It’s a love letter to the 16-bit era with traditional undertones set for a North American release this summer. Summer is when I embark on epic journeys to clear out my back-avalanche, too, so this doesn’t bode well for me.

End of Serenity, from what I can gather from these blurry and nondescript screenshots, follows the typical JRPG archetype down to the letter, with a tale that follows “mysterious objects” known as materia Atomigems that people in the game world have utilized for many years. But creepy stuff happens in nowhere the world when a gang known as the Underworld (pretty weird gang name, for real) begins snapping up all of the Atomigems for a nefarious plot. It’s up to Courage you to save your new home the world!

Actually, End of Serenity, as awesome omniscient Japanator EIC and all-around cool guyTim Sheehy points out, looks to be a sequel of some sort or at least a related game to End of Aspiration, a mobile RPG that shares the same storyline with that of Serenity. Some of the characters appear to be carrying over as well, a detail Natsume is curiously leaving out. With an exclusive release via PlayStation Network for End of Serenity, perhaps this is a re-release or update of the mobile game or simply the next in the saga — whatever the saga is.

End of Serenity will be on display at this year’s E3 and will be released this summer exclusively via PlayStation Network for the PSP. Wait, PSP? Yeah, I don’t know either.
