One month to go until Nintendo Switch Online launches

When the $20-per-year Nintendo Switch Online service launches in the second half of September, subscribers will be able to play classic NES games like Super Mario Bros. 3 with added online play. If you were curious about what that might look like, here’s a quick preview complete with a Player 1 icon.

Play Super Mario Bros. 3 online with #NintendoSwitchOnline when the service launches this September and relive the classic #NES game that brought renowned power-ups such as Raccoon Mario to the world of Super Mario Bros.! https://t.co/ZPh216goDt pic.twitter.com/4wuBC9DKFp

I think I’ll enjoy revisiting NES games like Donkey Kong, Tetris, and Super Mario Bros. 3 for a week or two at which point my subscription will simply devolve into online multiplayer support and cloud saves.

The price is cheap enough that I’ll pay it and not grumble, but I do hope Nintendo finds other ways to make Nintendo Switch Online more enticing over the coming months and years. It’s clear that back-catalog games won’t appear on Switch under a Wii- or Wii U-style Virtual Console release schedule. I’ve accepted that. I just hope Nintendo doesn’t take much longer to expand its scope beyond NES.
