Oculus: We're not out to make VR games like The Last of Us

It’s focusing on smaller experiences

Oculus VR has been hard at work assembling teams of developers for its first-party games initiative. However, when titles begin to release, don’t expect them to be lengthy melodramas that aim to compete with other games in the triple-A space. At least not right away.

When I talked with Oculus VR founder and CEO Brendan Iribe and VP of product Nate Mitchell, they told me that the first-party experiences Oculus wants to create immediately are shorter ones that show off what the technology can do. “Right now, we’re not looking at building The Last of UsVR. What we’re starting with is a lot of prototypes and things you’ve seen in the community, smaller experiences that really highlight some of the best things about VR,” Mitchell said. Iribe jumped in and added “But with triple-A quality art and content.”

It’s a wise direction given the fact that Oculus is trying to drive the adoption of a new product. Length and scope might come later; for now, it’s all about creative and engaging uses of the technology.
