I promised myself I wouldn’t cry…

For almost two years, I’ve taken time out to fill y’all in on the colourful competitive weekends known as “splatfests”, which have frequently charged the community of Nintendo’s Splatoon 2 with matters of physics, mythology, movies, science, clothing, mascots, foodstuffs and, of course, toilet roll…

…And next month, it all comes to an end.

Nintendo has revealed the theme of the final Splatoon 2 splatfest, which will draw a line in the sand between players one last time. The “Splatocalypse” is set to take place on the weekend of July 18 and will run for 72 hours. Surprisingly, this final battle will not be asking fans to choose between Splatoon 2 hosts, (and two of my favourite gaming gals), Pearl and Marina, and will instead ask players to side with one of life’s opposing forces: Chaos and Order.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Queen of the World Pearl will be heading up Team Chaos, while her calmer-headed BFF Marina will captain Team Order. Players will receive special in-game gear dependent on their choices, then take to Splatoon 2’s arena battles one last time, answering the big questions that no-one else dare ask. All previous Shifty Stations will also be returning to the mix for the last hurrah.

We’ve known for a long time now that Nintendo is winding down Splatoon 2, a game which has brought a lot of joy to many Switch owners worldwide. As to whether we’ll be hearing about a new sequel soon, that’s still up in the air. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. There’s still business to attend to. June’s splatfests take place next week, before the curtain finally falls on this current iteration of splatfests next month.

Who knows what the future holds? We’ll find out soon enough. But for now, squid kids – whichever side you choose – Don’t get cooked. Stay off the hook.

The time has come! The Splatocalypse looms over the world of #Splatoon2! Will you side with Pearl and embrace #TeamChaos, or join Marina and enforce #TeamOrder?
