I can’t get enough of this art direction

While it’s perhaps not as high-profile a release as The Last of Us, Japan Studio’s Puppeteer is another very promising game to help close out the PlayStation 3’s library. If you haven’t been keeping track of this platformer, don’t do anything until you watch this trailer. Art director Gavin Moore explains the basic plot of the title, which goes a little something like this:

“[It’s a] tale about a boy who’s snatched away from the earth, shoves his body into a wooden puppet, he then upsets this evil moonbear king who pulls off his head, eats it, and throws him away. But he manages to get up, run around — and with the help of a strange, weird cat — he finds these different objects that he can use as heads, and he gets sent on this adventure to try and get his way back home.”

Not your typical story, then. Above all else, it’s the variety on display that has me anticipating Puppeteer, especially when it comes to those ridiculous-looking boss battles. Just, wow. “You will never see the same thing again,” says Moore. “Everything is hand-animated, so as I say, my staff hate me, but they’re so proud of it because it’s pure craftsmanship.”
