In 2012, Microsoft rolled out a promotion in which people could pay $99 for an Xbox 360 (the basic 4GB model) with a Kinect — if they signed up for a two-year Xbox Live Gold commitment of $14.99 per month. It’s the sort of subsidized model we see in other tech sectors but not so much with major game consoles. Anyway, it’s over. For now.
Microsoft spokesperson David Dennis confirmed the company ended the offer back in July. “This program was intended to be a pilot experiment from the start, and Microsoft routinely adjusts the mix of offers available to its customers and this change was simply standard business practice,” he told The Wall Street Journal.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar program return for the Xbox One, but only once the console is getting on in years, toward the end of its lifecycle.
