One of six content updates this year

The Hungering Deep, the first major content update for Sea of Thieves, is set to arrive on May 29.

Microsoft and Rare debuted a trailer on Inside Xbox, and if you’ve been following along, you’ll know not to expect anything too concrete from this tease. The developers hope to “deliver [new content] in a kind of cool, fun, slightly different way,” one that involves player collaboration and puzzle solving.

There’s talk of ships disappearing, pirates making sacrifices to sail the seas undisturbed, and a fairly clear harpoon tease. “The ancient people encountered monsters so powerful and terrible that they worshiped them as gods. Some say that the ancients even learned how to summon such creatures.”

Rare previously described The Hungering Deep as a “unique event” with a new type of AI threat and “new ways to play.” It’s also worth noting that the studio has called this a medium-sized update, with future updates like Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores having more development lead time.
