Zelda producer hints that things might be different for the protagonist

Yesterday’s reveal of The Legend of Zelda on Wii U got many people excited. With the tease of a new visual style and a more open world to explore, there was yet another reason for people to consider purchasing a Wii U. However, during a private roundtable interview with the press, series producer Eiji Aonuma hinted that the main character we saw in the trailer may be more different than we realize.

Speaking to VentureBeat, Aonuma gave a clue about the possibility of the main character being different. Asked about Link’s new appearance, he said “No one explicitly said that that was Link” with a smile and a laugh.

After re-watching the trailer, Nintendo certainly made a big deal about how it revealed this specific character. After the character removed their cloak, the music swelled and the camera zoomed in on their face. However, it seems most people assumed it was just Link.

With that said, it seems like a fine time to switch things up for the series. Over the years, there’s been an increasing number of Zelda fans desiring a change of pace and main character for the series. And with the promise of an open world to explore and more choice on how you do so, giving players a brand new look will be a great way to signal change.
