The new PS Vita seems pretty nice

Quick hands-on in Tokyo

I thought I’d have to wait until later this week at Tokyo Game Show to get my hands on the newly announced PlayStation Vita model. But in doing my geek crawl of Tokyo yesterday I came across a display in Shinjuku for the new Vita.

It was displayed next to a current model, giving me an opportunity to compare the two. I really like the new one more. It’s thinner and lighter, sure, but what won me over was how great it feels in the hands. The all-rubberized rear grip material helps out there.

The sticks and d-pad feel good, though mostly the same as before. The new face buttons seem improved. They bigger and rounder, and they feel more responsive now.

This new Vita looks more plastic-y than its predecessor, just as the later PSP models were lighter and cheaper looking than the first ones. But it doesn’t look bad.

I dig how the screen cover plastic is rounded and goes to the top and bottom edges of the new Vita.

They only had the black model on display. I’m guessing we’ll get to see the full rainbow of colors at TGS later this week, as well as a more substantial hands-on with some real games. Stay tuned.
