Nostalgia goggles are primed and ready

Oh I tell you, it brings a small ray of sunshine to my old and tired heart to load up Steam and see an old favorite of mine has been added to the service. Today is another one of those days as the original Descent has been made available on Valve’s service. You can buy this retro classic at half price for a limited time at $3.49/£2.49.

Back in the day (™), Descent wasn’t the first game to allow full ship control from a first-person perspective (X-Wing had come out a few years earlier) but having the game set underground in various mining facilities gave the game a sense of speed that space combat games lacked. It was always a challenge just to keep your bearings and work out where you were meant to be going. Oh, and to not fly into lava.

I’m not going to sit here and say “Hey, you all need to stop what you’re doing and play Descent!” because I realize that some of you reading are as old as the game but it’s still an interesting title to go back to. I’d love to see if there’s still the sense of vertigo and you suddenly change direction to fly down a vertical shaft, blasting robots left and right. Also, if someone were to patch in Oculus Rift support I would be so happy.
