Behind a long-locked door

The decade-long search for a solution to Tibia‘s biggest mystery is over. After countless hours, endless speculation, and a whole lot of grinding, player Dev Onica revealed what’s on the other side of the game’s fabled Gate of Expertise.

It should have been a monumental moment for Dev Onica and Tibia fans all over the world. Both the door, which only a level 999 player can open, and whatever’s behind it, has long been regarded as the game’s most alluring secret. But now that Dev Onica has crossed the threshold and revealed what’s on the other side, the consensus is that Tibia‘s best-kept secret is pretty lame.

PC Gamer’s Steven Messner has kept a close eye on the Tibia community’s collective journey towards the locked door. He recently published a detailed account of Dev Onica’s fateful trip. It’s full of tacky donation schemes, month-long grinds for a single level, and ultimately, disappointment.

Basically, Dev Onica crossed through the Gate of Expertise on June 23 only to emerge at a location called Schrodinger’s Island. The island, at least as far as anyone can tell, is an unassuming collection of sandy beaches and NPC vendors. It’s a far cry from the wild possibilities dreamed up by Tibia‘s player base, leaving plenty of people bummed out by the revelation.

Of course, there’s plenty of speculation that Schrodinger’s Island isn’t exactly as tame as it might seem. Mentions of yet-unsolved riddles and secrets about a banana stand are still floating around, but nothing else has come from Dev Onica’s exploration.

It all sounds like a convoluted mess, honestly. Especially when factoring in the story of a player named Kharsek. Last year, Kharsek became Tibia‘s first player to walk through the door. The Tibia community rallied around Kharsek, who crossed the threshold in 2016 only to never publicly comment on what awaited him. Instead, he stepped away from the limelight without a single word.

Tibia and its players love a good mystery. But in the case of Schrodinger’s Island, maybe some things are better left unsolved.
