‘When Walmart disrupts markets and competes, our customer wins’

The used games market is one that many big retailers have had their eye on, but few have been able to crack. GameStop is the giant with regard to brick-and-mortar stores, but it’s about to get some fierce competition from a likely opponent.

Walmart announced today that it’s launching a new trade-in program at more than 3,100 stores that gives people the option to offload their good condition games for immediate credit that can be used to buy anything from the store. Walmart will refurbish these games and repackage them for sale in-store later this year. The program goes live on March 26.

The move isn’t a surprising one for a company like Walmart that has the resources to launch a large-scale initiative like this. After all, there’s plenty of easy money to be made in the pre-owned games market, and GameStop is raking in a majority of it. If this takes off, it’ll be very interesting to see how everyone adapts to account for the increase in competition.
