Co-founder talks about design philosophy, prototypes, and ‘Halo’s greatest tragedy’

In a great interview with IGN, Bungie co-founder Jason Jones came out of the woodwork to talk about a wide range of topics, from Marathon to the studio’s upcoming Destiny. One of the more interesting pieces of information is the section on prototypes that will likely never release publicly.

Jones describes them as “ridiculous little projects,” and goes on to enumerate games such as a role-playing game that the studio built simply to learn, and the ill-fated “Project Phoenix,” which existed in a cube-filled world not unlike the one found inMinecraft. Unfortunately for the project, it was perpetually “trying to figure out what it was,” and eventually the team working on it was moved over to complete work on Halo.
