Is there a fictional character that you'd follow anywhere?

I’m looking at you, Segata

Back in the Atari 2600 days, it felt like there were only a few hundred video game characters throughout the industry as a whole, with only a few like Pac-Man or Pitfall Harry with any personality to speak of. These days it’s not uncommon for a game to deliver over a hundred characters to us on its own, each containing as much pizzazz as the entire cast of classic games such asKangaroo,Kaboom!or Keystone Kapers. While many of them are sure to be forgotten, you can never quite tell which will end up developing their own unique fandoms. Take Tangy for instance.

Game publishers and developers are well aware that we’re likely to collect any game that contains a character who we’ve formed an attachment to, which can lead to some pretty surprising crossovers. I wasn’t planning on buying Project X Zone 2until I saw how former Sega Saturn mascot Segata Sanshiro looks in-game. They did such a perfect job of capturing his ridiculous swagger that I feel powerless to stop myself from picking it up. It was the same thing when I saw the Prince of All Cosmos in Pac-Man Kart Rally and Gilius Thunderhead play Puyopop in Sega Superstars Tennis. I’ve heard people say the same thing about Bayonetta in The Wonderful 101and even Mr. Destructoid in Bomberman. If you’re one of those Mr. Destructoid loyalists, thank you, as always.

So have you ever bought a game just because it contained a certain character, and/or if there is a game you would definitely buy if a particular character was announced to be part of its cast? More so, have you regretted buying a game just because it contained a certain fictional personality, or is the feeling of having a complete collection of the Hunchbacksaga worth every penny?
