Manifest destiny: Valve could open a UK office

It’s not all quiet on the western front

As it has been distracting some of you with trading cards, Valve has also been making a bid for complete dominance of the western world. Last year, it opened up a little European office in Luxembourg. Said small studio focuses on Steam and its development partners, according to Develop, but, if it proves successful, it “could eventually be expanded into a fully-fledged development team.”

Valve’s imperialist march doesn’t seem to be over yet, however. While you’re all distracted with Steam sales, Valve has been at the Develop in Brighton conference, scoping out the development scene and, according to Develop, “looking at the potential viability of a local office in the country.”

We could be looking, down the line, at Valve games produced in Europe — in Luxembourg, no less — and the UK. Leave it to the Brits to siphon good, old American jobs, am I right? The trajectory makes sense, though. America’s Manifest Destiny drove expansion westward until the limits of the land were reached and the lack of submarines and undersea cities quelled the zeitgeist. Now, Valve’s ManifeSteam Destiny is driving from practically the westmost part of America, back eastward. It’s all just a little bit of history repeating.
