[Update: it appears as if the promotion is temporary through Microsoft.com, as expected.]

Microsoft is continuing its aggressive “let’s undercut Sony” scheme, following up its Xbox One console price cuts. One year of Xbox Live Gold is now $40 on Microsoft’s official site, which is often times the sale price at other retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. We have reached out to Microsoft to see if this sale is permanent or temporary, as it was previously available for $60 a year.

If the new price is here to stay it’s cheaper than Sony’s $50 PlayStation Plus, which also requires membership for online play. Though you could easily argue that Plus benefits severely outweigh Xbox Live Gold — even if Games on Gold has been getting better every month.
