Today marks the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany invading Poland in “retaliation” for numerous false flag attacks – perpetrated by the Nazis against themselves – then blamed on Poland. After years of unchecked aggression, blatant disregard for the Treaty of Versailles, and anti-Semitic laws and rhetoric, Hitler plunged the western world into war. Eventually, the Soviet Union joined the assault on Poland who, unable to defend against two militaristic superpowers, capitulated in a little over a month.

The Invasion of Poland, while the straw that broke the camel’s back, is a period of World War II that is rarely explored in fiction, let alone gaming. Polish development team MS Games are looking to rectify that fact by setting their game Land of War: The Beginning in Poland during the month-long ill-fated defense.

In the game, players will take on the role of Private Piotr Kowalski, who starts off at the Battle of Mokra, one of the rare victories for the Polish. Through the campaign you will follow Private Kowalski from battle to battle facing off against snipers and the dreaded Panzer tanks, possibly changing the course of history.

As much as it would be amazing to have a revisionist history game where Nazi punks are told to f–k off, I do hope that historical accuracy is left intact. We don’t get many depressing games, let alone shooters, and to show the tragedy and sacrifice of the Polish people and military could be an amazing memorial to those that were lost.

Land of War: The Beginning is expected to release sometime in 2020 for PC via Steam. There is also the possibility of ports for other platforms in the future.
