Still allegedly due out later this year

The cat is out of the bag with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and naturally, folks want to know everything they can about what is set to be one of the best-selling games of 2022.

Here’s a roundup of all the info we have, from the official website to other sources.

Breaking down the trailer and the confirmed Pokemon Scarlet and Violet roster

So the actual gameplay in the above trailer actually starts at 1:20 in, and runs through 2:20, until it reverts back to the “real life” gimmick and reveals the new starters. That’s roughly a full minute of actual game footage.

In it, we see several cities, seemingly using a fictional version of Europe again as a canvas; and the first major hub shown looks a lot like a combination between Motostoke and Wyndon (Pokemon Sword and Shield) from a design/layout standpoint. Visually they are a lot of similarities to Pokemon Legends, including the background details like grass and foliage.

We also get to see a ton of wild/outdoor areas, with Pokemon like Psyduck, Drifloon, Combee, Meowth, Swablu, Stonjourner, Pikachu, Magnemite, Pelipper, Clauncher, Blissey, Seviper, Larvitar, and Lucario confirmed.

It’s going to be open world

The trailer makes that clear to some degree, but thanks to a tweet from The Pokemon Company, it confirms that Scarlet and Violet will be open world.

The website adds that you can explore “various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders. You’ll be able to see the Pokémon of this region in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets—all over!”

The three starters are Sprigatito (grass), Fuecoco (fire), and Quaxly (water)

While starters’ first forms generally go over well with the community in mainline games, these are the talk of the town. We have a bit of mechanical info on the trio, as they will sport overgrow, blaze, and torrent abilities respectively.

Speaking of “starters,” the trainers will also have different outfits based on what game you play. You can view those in the gallery below.

It has a ‘late 2022’ release date

In the presentation, The Pokemon Company unveiled a late 2022 release date. Based on the footage it looks like a lot of the development has been completed, and the game is likely in its polishing stages.

Note that the last major Pokemon “generational” game, Sword and Shield, was released in November 2019. So somewhere right before December is likely, so Scarlet and Violet can make the most out of the holiday season.

It will be compatible with Home, but with provisos

Here’s the official word from The Pokemon Company itself (via PR) on Home compatibility:

“Each game that can receive Pokemon via Pokémon HOME can receive only Pokemon that can be obtained in that particular game. To find out what Pokemon appear in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet, please look forward to the release of those games.”
