Plus Capcom has two secret games coming soon

Capcom’s continued plan to remaster old Resident Evil games is paying off. “Last fiscal year Resident Evil 0 HD remaster performed favorably with approximately 800 thousand units sold,” Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto said. “and additionally we released Resident Evil 6 for PS4 and Xbox One.” I half wonder if that means no one re-bought Resident Evil 6, which lacks historical distance and nostalgia.

“This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise; we plan to release PS4 and Xbox One versions of Resident Evil 4 and 5, and what‟s more, we are currently working on a full remake of Resident Evil 2.”

Remakes, remasters, remakes! Here is my scalding take: it’d be just fine if Capcom spent a lot of time on remakes/HD remasters, but also was pumping more original, good games.

Street Fighter V was a false start — the company admitted it screwed up (but probably only because sales were less than expected) with the fighter. And even then, beyond Street Fighter, Capcom hasn’t put out much in the last decade or so to get me excited (Dragon’s Dogma!). I can only partially attribute that to continued bitterness stemming from closing Clover.

But I do legitimately appreciate games of antiquity not being consigned to it. Over the weekend I caught two Japanese movies from the 60’s (A Colt is My Passport and Branded to Kill). I wouldn’t be able to do that with restoration efforts that keeps things from getting lost to time. Remember how hard it was to buy a copy of Grim Fandango ahead of the remaster?

So, sure, there’s all that remaster/remake business, fine. Now Capcom needs to show it can still make new classics, rather than just polish its old ones. Over the next 10 months, Capcom has the following on the docket:

  • Monster Hunter Title (planned for two million sales)
  • Major Title #1 (planned for four million sales)
  • Major Title #2 (planned for two million sales)

One of these has got to be Resident Evil 7, right? Maybe good for four million and a new Devil May Cry for two million? Unless Capcom is actually making something proper new (or plunging the depths of an older property).
