…and their sales were electric

Early Access is always a bit of a gamble for developers. They are putting forth a project in progress that they plan to continue working on but still want people to pay for it. It’s also a gamble for consumers as it’s not as simple as reading a review or watching a video about the current state of the game. You need to trust the developer enough to finish the project even after they get paid.

Whether it’s because of their previous releases or through proof of concept, Hopoo Games has seemingly done the difficult by crossing the million sales mark for Risk of Rain 2 while still in Early Access.

The amazing thing is that according to the publishers, the million sales milestone took the original Risk of Rain five years to achieve, and here the sequel took almost a month. Can’t really say I’m surprised though. Risk of Rain 2 takes the original roguelike concept of landing on alien planets and gathering enough power-ups before the world grows too strong and brings it nearly flawlessly into the 3D realm.

There’s such a great power creep where you get powerful weapon combos, knowing full well that the monsters around you are also getting more powerful that it’s an unbridled joy to play. Also, Hopoo fixed and improved multiplayer after destroying it in the original, so there’s definitely that aspect to the fun.

Risk of Rain 2 is currently in Early Access on Steam with a projected final release for spring 2020, after which there are plans to bring it to consoles as well.
